1 A concurrent resolution encouraging North Dakota citizens to purchase United States flags
2 made out of hemp and manufactured in North Dakota.
3 WHEREAS, on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed an Act to establish an
4 official flag for our new nation; and
5 WHEREAS, for more than 200 years, the United States flag has served as a symbol of our
6 nation's unity, freedom, and patriotism, as well as a source of pride and inspiration for millions of
7 citizens;
8 WHEREAS, historians assert the first United States flags were made from hemp; and
9 WHEREAS, hemp is stronger and more durable than cotton; and
10 WHEREAS, hemp fades less than other fabrics; and
11 WHEREAS, state law prohibits state entities or political subdivisions from purchasing a
12 United States flag unless the flag was manufactured in the United States; and
13 WHEREAS, North Dakota citizens should demonstrate their patriotism by supporting local
14 businesses in our state which manufacture United States flags made out of durable materials,
15 such as hemp;
16 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
17 NORTH DAKOTA, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN:
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all North Dakota citizens are encouraged to purchase
19 United States flags made out of hemp and manufactured in North Dakota; and
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Secretary of State forward copies of this resolution
21 to the commissioner of commerce and members of the North Dakota Congressional Delegation.
