1 A BILL for an Act to amend and reenact subsection 1 of section 15.1-21-02.3 of the North
2 Dakota Century Code, relating to optional high school curriculum.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF NORTH DAKOTA:
4 SECTION 1. AMENDMENT. Subsection 1 of section 15.1-21-02.3 of the North Dakota
5 Century Code is amended and reenacted as follows:
6 1. If after completing at least two years of high school, a student has failed to pass at
7 least one-half unit from three subdivisions in subsection 1 of section 15.1-21-02.2, has
8 failed to demonstrate proficiency in a standards-based grading system, or has a grade
9 point average at or below the twenty-fifth percentile of other students in the district
10 who are enrolled in the same grade, the student may request the student's career
11 advisor, guidance counselor, or principal meet with the student and the student's
12 parent to determine whether the student should be permitted to pursue an optional
13 high school curriculum, in place of the requirements set forth in section 15.1-21-02.2. If
14 a student's parent consents in writing to the student pursuing the optional high school
15 curriculum, the student is eligible to receive a high school diploma upon completing
16 the following requirements:
17 a. Four units of English language arts from a sequence that includes literature,
18 composition, and speech;
19 b. Two units of mathematics;
20 c. Two units of science;
21 d. Three units of social studies, which may include up to one-half unit of North
22 Dakota studies and one-half unit of multicultural studies;
23 e. (1) One unit of physical education; or
24 (2) One-half unit of physical education and one-half unit of health;

1 f. Two units of:
2 (1) Foreign languages;
3 (2) Native American languages;
4 (3) Fine arts; or
5 (4) Career and technical education courses; and
6 g. Any seven additional units.
