1 A SENATE RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF DAVID WILLIAM
2 HOYLE, SR., FORMER MEMBER OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
3 Whereas, David William Hoyle, Sr., was born on February 4, 1939, in Gaston County
4 to William Atkin Hoyle and Ethel Brown Hoyle; and
5 Whereas, David Hoyle graduated from Dallas High School in 1957, attended The
6 Citadel for one year, and then received a BA in Business Administration from Lenoir-Rhyne
7 College (now Lenoir-Rhyne University) in 1960; and
8 Whereas, David Hoyle, at the age of 28, was the youngest person ever elected as
9 Mayor of the Town of Dallas. He was appointed to the North Carolina Board of Transportation
10 by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., and served as a member from 1977 to 1984; and
11 Whereas, David Hoyle was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1992, where he
12 served with honor and distinction for nine terms, ending in 2010. During his tenure in the General
13 Assembly, Senator Hoyle served as a member of numerous committees. Senator Hoyle served as
14 the Co-Chairman of the Finance Committee, the Chairman of the Committee on Rules and
15 Operations of the Senate, and the Vice-Chairman of the Commerce Committee; and
16 Whereas, after retiring from the General Assembly, David Hoyle was appointed by
17 Governor Beverly Purdue as the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Revenue, where
18 he served from 2010 to 2013; and
19 Whereas, in addition to being a proud and dedicated public servant, David Hoyle was
20 also a real estate investor who served on numerous boards of textile, banking, and construction
21 interests, including the Board of Citizens South Bank-Gastonia; Chair of the Board of
22 Lenoir-Rhyne University; Chair of the Board of Gaston Memorial Hospital (now CaroMont
23 Health); and as a member of the Heart Society, Chamber of Commerce, and Schiele Museum;
24 and
25 Whereas, David Hoyle was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where
26 he chaired the Church Council and taught Sunday school; and
27 Whereas, David Hoyle passed away on March 29, 2023, at the age of 84; and
28 Whereas, David Hoyle is survived by his wife, Linda Summey Hoyle; children,
29 Lonnia Beam and David "Dave" W. Hoyle, Jr.; grandchildren, Matthew Hoyle Beam, David
30 William "Will" Hoyle, III, and Michael Blair Hoyle; and great-grandchildren, Clara Elisabeth
31 Beam, Samuel Ryan Beam, Henry William Beam, and Adalynn Rose Hoyle; and
32 Whereas, David Hoyle spent the majority of his adult life serving the people of the
33 Great State of North Carolina. His work was not always known to the public but was often
34 accomplished after many hours of study and diligence alongside his Senate colleagues in an effort
35 to better the lives of the people he was elected to serve; Now, therefore,
36 Be it resolved by the Senate:

1 SECTION 1. The Senate honors the memory of David William Hoyle, Sr., former
2 member of the Senate, and expresses the appreciation of this State, and its citizens, for his service.
3 SECTION 2. The Senate extends its sympathy to the family of David William Hoyle,
4 Sr., for the loss of their beloved family member.
5 SECTION 3. The Principal Clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the family
6 of David William Hoyle, Sr.
7 SECTION 4. This resolution is effective upon adoption.
