This bill establishes a program aimed at improving wildlife habitat on state lands in Montana. It authorizes the creation of a grant program managed by the department, in collaboration with lessees of state lands and the department of natural resources and conservation. The program allows various entities, including lessees, permittees, non-governmental organizations, and state agencies, to submit grant applications for projects that enhance wildlife habitat. Each application must detail the project, its location, estimated costs, and benefits to wildlife, and must have the concurrence of the lessee and the department of natural resources and conservation. The bill specifies that approved projects will be funded through designated accounts related to wildlife habitat improvement.
Additionally, the bill includes provisions for reporting to the legislature on the funded projects and defines "state lands" in accordance with existing law. It also includes a codification instruction to integrate the new section into Title 87, chapter 1, part 2 of the Montana Code Annotated. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
