WHEREAS, voter identification laws strengthen public confidence in elections by 2 assuring voters that ballots are cast only by eligible citizens, reinforcing trust in democratic 3 outcomes in Missouri and nationwide; and 4 5 WHEREAS, photo identification is already required for numerous everyday activities 6 including boarding flights, opening bank accounts, or purchasing age-restricted items; and 7 8 WHEREAS, voter identification laws help deter and prevent potential election fraud 9 before it occurs, reducing the need for costly investigations and litigation after elections; and 10 11 WHEREAS, there is bipartisan public support for voter identification laws, evidenced 12 by a Pew Research Center study, showing 83% of Americans favor requiring all voters to 13 show government-issued photo identification to vote, including 95% of Republicans and 71% 14 of Democrats; and 15 16 WHEREAS, a recent Gallup poll revealed that 84% of Americans support requiring 17 photo identification to vote, including 98% of Republicans, 84% of independents, and 67% of 18 Democrats; and 19 20 WHEREAS, 83% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship when 21 registering to vote for the first time: 22 23 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the House of 24 Representatives of the One Hundred Third General Assembly, Second Regular Session, the 25 Senate concurring therein, hereby commend the United States House of Representatives for 26 passing the SAVE Act and urge the United States Senate to follow suit; and 27 HCR 48 2
28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of 29 Representatives be instructed to prepare a properly inscribed copy of this resolution for the 30 members of the Missouri congressional delegation. ✔
