HB 2411 -- MEMORIAL HIGHWAY DESIGNATION

SPONSOR: Sassmann

Currently, the Missouri Medal of Honor Recipients Fund is used to pay renewal fees for memorial bridges and memorial highway signs for Missouri Medal of Honor recipients.

This bill renames the Fund the "Fallen Heroes Fund", and expands the uses of the Fund to cover the costs associated with memorial designations for members of the Armed Forces killed in the line of duty or missing in action, emergency personnel killed while performing duties relating to their employment, and state employees killed while serving the State.

Currently, a person or group can petition the Department of Transportation for a memorial bridge or highway designation with:

(1) An application on a form produced by the Department describing the bridge or segment of highway for which the designation is being sought that includes the name of a member of the General Assembly that will sponsor the designation;

(2) A list of at least 100 signatures;

(3) A fee to cover the costs needed to construct the signs.

This bill removes the signature requirement. The bill also removes the requirement that the person for whom the bridge or segment of highway is to be named after has been deceased for more than two years.
