HB 1545 -- TRANSFER OF FIREARMS

SPONSOR: Burton

This bill specifies that any person who is not a licensed dealer must require that a background check be conducted of a perspective transferee prior to the transfer of a firearm, with certain exceptions specified in the bill. No transfer may be completed until the prospective firearm transferor has obtained approval of the transfer from the central repository, as defined, after a background check.

A licensed dealer or law enforcement agency may charge a fee for conducting a background check, not exceed $25 or the cost of conducting the background check, whichever is greater.

Violations of these provisions are a Class B misdemeanor. Each day a violation of these provisions is committed or continued will be considered a separate violation.

This bill is the same as HB 357 (2025) and HB 2487 (2024).
