HB 1414 -- EXEMPTIONS FROM THE EARNED PAID SICK TIME LAW

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "Do Pass" by the Standing Committee on Commerce by a vote of 7 to 3.

Currently, under the law various classes of employees are listed who are exempt from the earned paid sick time law. This bill adds to that list individuals who are employees of an employer engaged in the operation of a vessel that is documented by the United States under Federal law.

This bill is the same as SB 703 (2025).

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill clarifies the law and brings it in conformity with railroads and airline industry that doesn't have to comply with the requirements.

Testifying in person for the bill were Representative Dolan; Allegis, Redwood, Maxim Public Affairs; Arnie Dienoff.

OPPONENTS: Those who oppose the bill say that its not about the barge workers. Reference to the United States Code section in the bill could affect the barges at the lake.

Testifying in person against the bill was Jobs With Justice.
