HB 1244 -- PLAYGROUND CONSTRUCTION

SPONSOR: Proudie

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "Do Pass" by the Standing Committee on Emerging Issues by a vote of 15 to 0.

This bill requires any new playground area and playground surface constructed by the State or a political subdivision to comply with ADA standards for Accessible Design.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that all people, regardless of their status, should be able to play freely on a playground. But many playgrounds have surfaces that are not suitable for wheelchairs and other devices used by certain individuals. Supporters further say that accessible playgrounds allow all children to engage in physical activity, and shows these individuals that they matter.

Testifying in person for the bill were Representative Proudie; Missouri Disability Empowerment Foundation; Arnie C. Dienoff; Becki Uccello; and Izzi Uccello.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
