HB 924 -- FETAL DEATHS

SPONSOR: Sparks

This bill requires a death certificate to be issued for each fetal death, defined in the bill as a death of an unborn child due to the performance of an abortion, regardless of the pregnancy's duration.

The cause of death in any case of an induced fetal death where the abortion was not performed as a result of a medical emergency must be listed as homicide.

Current law requires the Social Security number of any individual who has died to be placed in the death records; this bill exempts the death records of an unborn child from that requirement.

The bill also modifies a provision governing the process by which medical certifications are returned to the person in charge of final disposition of dead bodies, to include persons responsible for the care of the mother of the deceased unborn child for the abortion or for any health care services provided due to the effects of the abortion.
