HB 843 -- DEATH PENALTY

SPONSOR: Reed

Currently, the punishment for first degree murder or other class A felonies is either the death penalty or life imprisonment without eligibility for parole. This bill eliminates the punishment of the death penalty. In any case in which a person has been previously sentenced to death, the trial court that previously sentenced the person will cause the person to be brought before the court to have the person's sentence modified to life imprisonment without probation, parole, or release except by act of the Governor.

This bill is the same as HB 1846 (2024) and HB 609 (2023).
