HB 491 -- AUTHORITY TO CONTRACT FOR MARRIED MINORS

This bill considers married 16 and 17 year olds legally competent to enter into a contract. This includes the ability to enter into a contract for, among other types of contracts, housing, employment, purchase of an automobile, to obtain health care, to obtain a student loan, to establish a bank account, and to seek admission to a shelter for victims of domestic violence or to a rape crisis center. The bill authorizes married 16 and 17 year olds to commence, prosecute, or defend any action in their own name as a real party in interest.
