HB 378 -- MOTOR VEHICLE TEMPORARY PERMITS

SPONSOR: Pollitt

This bill authorizes law enforcement officers, based on reasonable suspicion, to stop, inspect, or detain someone to determine whether a temporary permit is valid or current. If it has expired by at least 60 days or has been altered, the law enforcement officer must issue a citation and the person will be fined $250.

If the person properly registers the vehicle within 30 days, the prosecutor will not prosecute the citation and the offense will not appear on the person's driving record. If the person fails to register the vehicle, the court must notify the person that it is ordering the Department of Revenue to suspend the person's driving privileges. Once the person properly registers the vehicle, his or her driving privileges will be restored.

If the person receives additional citations for a temporary permit offense for the same vehicle, the vehicle will be impounded until it is properly registered.

This bill is the same as HCS HB 1754 (2024).
