HB 226 -- DEPARTMENT OF THE HIGHWAY PATROL

Currently, the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is under the Department of Public Safety. This bill removes the MSHP from under the Department of Public Safety and creates the Department of the Highway Patrol, which will be in the charge of the Superintendent of the MSHP. All powers, duties, and functions of the MSHP will be transferred to the Department of the Highway Patrol.

The enactment of the provisions of this bill is contingent on the passage and approval by the voters of a constitutional amendment to add a department to the state department maximum. Upon voter approved the bill has an effective date of December 3, 2026.
