This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 624.714, subdivision 18, to enhance regulations regarding the carrying of firearms on the campuses of public postsecondary institutions. It allows these institutions to establish policies that restrict the carry or possession of firearms by visitors on their property. If a visitor is found carrying a firearm in violation of these policies, they may be ordered to leave the premises, and failure to comply would result in a petty misdemeanor charge, with a maximum fine of $25 for a first offense. Additionally, firearms carried in violation of this new provision will not be subject to forfeiture.

The bill also maintains existing provisions that allow public and private employers to restrict firearm possession by employees during work and permits public postsecondary institutions to impose restrictions on students regarding firearms on campus. However, it clarifies that institutions cannot prohibit the lawful carry or possession of firearms in parking facilities or areas. This legislative change aims to balance public safety with the rights of individuals regarding firearm possession on educational campuses.
