This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2025 Supplement, section 609.2231, subdivision 2, to establish the crime of physically assaulting a security officer in a hospital or clinic as a gross misdemeanor. The current law already includes protections for firefighters and emergency medical personnel, as well as healthcare providers in hospital emergency departments. The amendment adds security officers to this list, making it a gross misdemeanor to physically assault them while they are performing their duties.
Additionally, the bill specifies that if the assault results in demonstrable bodily harm, the perpetrator may be charged with a felony, which carries a potential sentence of up to three years in prison or a fine of up to $6,000. The new provisions will take effect on August 1, 2026, and will apply to crimes committed on or after that date.
