This bill aims to enhance fair campaign practices in Minnesota by increasing penalties for intimidation and interference with the voting process, as well as for interference with the duties of election officials. Specifically, it amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, sections 211B.075 and 211B.076, to change the classification of violations from a gross misdemeanor to a felony. Additionally, the maximum civil penalty for violations is raised from $1,000 to $10,000, thereby strengthening the legal repercussions for such offenses.

The bill also allows the attorney general, county attorneys, and individuals harmed by these violations to pursue civil actions to prevent or restrain prohibited acts, as well as to recover damages and attorney fees. The civil remedies provided are cumulative and do not limit other available rights or remedies. The effective date of these changes is set for the day following final enactment, applying to crimes and causes of action occurring on or after that date.
