This bill amends Minnesota Statutes to allow for the donation of eggs that have surpassed their quality assurance date, provided certain conditions are met. A new definition for "quality assurance date" is introduced, which refers to the date after which eggs may lose their palatability or nutritive properties due to natural spoilage. The bill specifies that eggs must be clearly labeled according to Minnesota consumer grades and establishes that eggs held 46 days past their coded pack date for Grade A eggs lose their grades and must be removed from sale, with the exception of those that can be donated.
The conditions for donating eggs past their quality assurance date include that they must be in their original packaging, previously candled and graded, continuously refrigerated, and distributed to consumers within 30 days of the original quality assurance date. Additionally, the packaging must include specific labeling information, such as the name of the charitable food assistance program, a "distribute by" date, and a statement indicating that the eggs are for donation and not for resale.
