This bill amends existing education finance laws in Minnesota to expand the eligibility for school safety grants to include nonpublic schools and Tribal contract schools. Specifically, it modifies the language in Laws 2023, chapter 55, article 8, section 19, subdivision 2, to allow grants for building security and cybersecurity to be awarded not only to school districts but also to nonpublic and Tribal contract schools. The bill also stipulates that if grants from the 2024 appropriation have not been awarded by the effective date of the act, the commissioner may reopen the application process and adjust grant amounts accordingly.
Additionally, the bill specifies that funds from the appropriations can be used for security-related facility improvements, cybersecurity insurance premiums, and associated costs. It establishes that this is a one-time appropriation available until June 30, 2029, and includes a provision for the effective date of the section to be the day following its enactment.
