This bill mandates the establishment of policies aimed at ensuring the safety of elected officials within communities in Minnesota. By December 31, 2026, the Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training is required to develop a model policy that addresses this issue, consulting with various legislative and law enforcement stakeholders. The model policy must include provisions for local law enforcement agencies to maintain records of elected officials' addresses, establish communication channels with them, and provide necessary security measures.

Furthermore, by September 1, 2027, all local law enforcement agencies must create and implement a written policy regarding the safety of elected officials that aligns closely with the model policy. The bill also grants the Board the authority to impose licensing sanctions and seek injunctive relief for non-compliance. The term "elected official" is defined to encompass individuals elected to government positions at all levels, including those appointed to fill vacancies. The provisions of this bill will take effect the day after final enactment.
