The Minnesota House of Representatives has passed a resolution reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the sister-state relationship with Taiwan, which was established in 1984. The resolution highlights the strong bilateral trade, educational, cultural exchanges, and tourism between Minnesota and Taiwan, emphasizing shared values such as freedom, democracy, and human rights. In 2024, Taiwan was Minnesota's ninth-largest export market, with significant exports in medical and electronic equipment, and Taiwan has also been a crucial partner during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing over 100,000 masks to Minnesota.
Furthermore, the resolution supports Minnesota businesses in their engagement with Taiwan, allowing them to refer to Taiwan as such in their dealings, in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act. It endorses ongoing negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement and other economic frameworks to enhance trade and investment between Minnesota and Taiwan. The resolution also advocates for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations, reinforcing Minnesota's support for Taiwan's contributions to global humanitarian efforts and international cooperation.
