The bill establishes a new pilot program focused on plant-based foods production training, to be administered by the commissioner of higher education. Under the new section [136A.247] PLANT-BASED FOODS PRODUCTION TRAINING PILOT PROGRAM, the program will provide grants to secondary career and technical education programs and institutions of higher education. Priority will be given to institutions that collaborate with local producers of plant-based foods. The grants can be utilized for various costs, including equipment for food production, facility renovations, and training faculty in the fundamentals of plant-based food production. Additionally, the bill appropriates $500,000 in fiscal year 2026 from the general fund to support this pilot program, which is a one-time appropriation available until June 30, 2027. This funding aims to enhance educational opportunities in the growing field of plant-based food production, thereby promoting sustainable practices and supporting local agricultural economies.
