Specifically, it allows for the construction of a new nuclear power facility on Prairie Island and permits the establishment of a new facility designed to store spent nuclear fuel produced by a nuclear-powered electric generating plant other than the one currently in operation at Prairie Island.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that any certificate of need for additional storage of spent nuclear fuel for a facility seeking a license extension must address the impacts of continued operations during the approval period. The new legal language inserted into the statute clarifies these provisions, and the bill is set to take effect the day following its final enactment.
