The bill proposes the establishment of a "Lawns to Lunch" pilot program, which aims to promote the planting of food gardens in residential landscapes and community spaces. An appropriation of $1,000,000 from the general fund for fiscal year 2026 is allocated to the Board of Water and Soil Resources to provide financial and technical assistance for this initiative. The program will support the planting of various food items, including vegetables, fruits (including fruit trees), and other food plants, as well as flowering plants that aid in pollination.

Additionally, the bill allows the Board to collaborate with local governments, the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteer program, and nonprofit organizations to enhance the program's effectiveness. However, the funds cannot be used for constructing greenhouses or other buildings, nor for planting food intended for sale or commercial purposes. This appropriation is a one-time allocation and will remain available until June 30, 2030.
