The bill proposes the establishment of a "Lawns to Lunch Pilot Program" in Minnesota, aimed at promoting the planting of food gardens in residential landscapes and community spaces. An appropriation of $1,000,000 from the general fund for fiscal year 2026 is designated for this initiative, which will provide financial and technical assistance for planting various food items, including vegetables, fruits (including fruit trees), and other food plants, as well as flowering plants to support pollination. The Board of Water and Soil Resources is authorized to collaborate with local governments, the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteer program, and nonprofit organizations to implement the program.
Additionally, the bill specifies that the funds allocated for the program cannot be used for constructing greenhouses or other buildings, nor for planting food intended for sale or commercial purposes. This appropriation is a one-time allocation and will remain available until June 30, 2030.
