This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 168.12, to authorize the issuance of special license plates for individuals who are both firefighters and certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The new subdivision outlines the eligibility criteria for applicants, which include being certified by the Office of Emergency Medical Services, being a member of a fire department, and owning a qualifying vehicle. Additionally, the bill specifies that the special plates must be designed to be distinguishable from other firefighter and ambulance attendant plates, and they can only be used while the individual meets the qualifications. If the individual no longer qualifies, they must remove the plates and obtain regular registration.
The bill also includes provisions for the transfer of these special plates to other vehicles owned by the individual, a transfer fee, and stipulates that fees collected will be credited to the driver and vehicle services operating account. Furthermore, it grants the commissioner the authority to adopt rules governing the issuance and use of these special plates. The effective date for this legislation is set for January 1, 2026, applying to plates issued on or after that date.
