This bill authorizes the placement of roadside signage for public access automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) at qualifying locations in Minnesota. It establishes a new section in the Minnesota Statutes, chapter 160, detailing the requirements for property owners or businesses wishing to request such signage. To qualify, they must meet registration, notice, and inspection requirements, ensure the AED is in an accessible location, and display visible signage on the premises. The relevant road authority is required to respond to requests for signage within specified timeframes, and all associated costs will be borne by the requesting participant. Additionally, if an AED is removed or becomes non-operational, the participant must notify the road authority to remove the signage.
The bill also mandates the commissioner of transportation to develop appropriate signage by September 1, 2025, that incorporates the universal symbol for AEDs. This signage must comply with the criteria established in the new section and be designed to facilitate public access during emergencies while minimizing visual clutter. The effective date for the new signage requirements is the day following final enactment, while the provisions regarding roadside signage for AEDs will take effect on October 1, 2025.
