This bill mandates that members of the legislature who serve on committees overseeing public safety policy and finance must participate in a ride-along with law enforcement or fire departments for a minimum of 12 hours during each biennium. This requirement aims to enhance the understanding of public safety issues among legislators by providing them with firsthand experience in the field.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that both the House of Representatives and the Senate are required to adopt rules to facilitate the implementation of this new requirement. The proposed legal language for this initiative is to be coded into Minnesota Statutes, chapter 3, under the new section designated as [3.057] PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEMBERS.
