This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.66, subdivision 1d, to allow certain retired law enforcement officers to carry firearms on school property. The existing law imposes penalties for possessing dangerous weapons on school grounds, but the amendment introduces a provision that permits individuals authorized to carry firearms under specific federal law to do so on school property without facing the same penalties. Additionally, the bill clarifies that firearms carried in violation of this new provision are not subject to forfeiture.

The bill also makes a deletion regarding the exemption for individuals on unimproved property owned or leased by a child care center or school, replacing it with a new exemption for persons authorized to carry firearms under federal law. Furthermore, it establishes that school districts cannot regulate firearms in a manner inconsistent with this subdivision. The changes will take effect on August 1, 2025, and will apply to crimes committed on or after that date.
