The bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 148.56, subdivision 1, to modify the limitations on optometrists regarding the prescribing and administering of drugs. It clarifies that optometrists can prescribe or administer legend drugs for the diagnosis and treatment of eye-related conditions, with specific restrictions. Notably, the bill allows for the administration of drugs by sub-Tenon, retrobulbar, or intravitreal injection, which was previously limited to treatment of anaphylaxis. Additionally, it introduces new provisions regarding the prescription of oral steroids, allowing them to be prescribed for up to 14 days only with prior consultation with a physician.
The bill also removes certain restrictions, such as the prohibition on prescribing Schedule II and III oral legend drugs and oral steroids, and eliminates the limit on the duration for which oral antivirals can be prescribed. Furthermore, it deletes the restriction on prescribing oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors for more than seven days. These changes aim to expand the scope of practice for optometrists while ensuring patient safety through necessary consultations and limitations.
