The bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.66, subdivision 1g, to authorize certain retired peace officers to possess firearms within the Capitol complex. Specifically, it adds a new provision that allows licensed peace officers and retired peace officers to carry pistols in compliance with federal law (United States Code, title 18, part I, chapter 44, section 926C) in buildings located in the Capitol Area. This addition expands the existing exemptions for possessing dangerous weapons in courthouses and state buildings, which previously included licensed peace officers and military personnel performing official duties, among others.

Additionally, the bill removes the requirement for express consent from the county sheriff or the commissioner of public safety for individuals possessing dangerous weapons in certain locations. The effective date for this amendment is set for August 1, 2025, and it will apply to crimes committed on or after that date.
