The bill mandates the commissioner of commerce to conduct a comprehensive study on advanced nuclear technology reactor power generation in Minnesota. This study will evaluate the potential costs, benefits, and impacts of such technology, specifically addressing its implications for the state's greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals, system costs for ratepayers, reliability, environmental effects, local job creation, and economic development. Additionally, the study will assess necessary modifications to current Minnesota statutes and administrative rules to facilitate the construction and operation of advanced nuclear reactors, as well as the economic feasibility of replacing coal-fired boilers with these reactors.
Furthermore, the commissioner is required to submit the findings of the study to the relevant legislative committees by January 31, 2026. To support this initiative, the bill appropriates $150,000 from the general fund for fiscal year 2026 to cover the costs associated with conducting the study and preparing the report. This funding is designated as a one-time appropriation.
