The bill establishes a career pathways program in emergency medicine, appropriating $300,000 from the general fund for fiscal year 2026 to support Independent School District No. 294, Houston, specifically for the Minnesota Virtual Academy's initiative. This program aims to provide students with up to two semesters of courses that lead to certification as emergency medical responders or emergency medical technicians. The funding can also be utilized to enhance student participation through additional academic and counseling support services, which may be contracted through the student's enrolling school district. The program is designed to actively reach out to and encourage participation from students of color, Indigenous students, low-income families, and other underserved populations across Minnesota.
Additionally, the bill mandates that Independent School District No. 294 submit annual reports to the relevant legislative committees from January 15, 2027, through January 15, 2029. These reports must detail students' experiences, document program spending and participation, provide demographic information about participants, and offer recommendations for improving career pathways programs statewide and increasing student engagement in these initiatives.
