This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.2231, subdivision 11, to expand the definition of "transit operator" to include drivers of transportation network companies (TNCs), such as those operating personal vehicles for ride-sharing services. Under the new provisions, a person can be charged with a gross misdemeanor for assaulting a transit operator or for intentionally throwing bodily fluids at them while they are performing their duties. The penalties for such offenses remain the same, allowing for imprisonment of up to 364 days or a fine of up to $3,000.

The bill specifically adds a new category to the definition of transit operators, which now includes TNC drivers, thereby extending legal protections against assault to these individuals while they are engaged in their work. The effective date for this amendment is set for August 1, 2025, and it will apply to crimes committed on or after that date.
