This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 120B.021, subdivision 4, to enhance the state's social studies academic standards by requiring the inclusion of contributions from lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, as well as people with disabilities, in the historical context of the state and the nation. The bill mandates that during the ten-year review and revision cycle of the social studies academic standards, the commissioner of education must ensure that these contributions are recognized and integrated into the curriculum.
In addition to this new requirement, the bill maintains existing provisions that outline the responsibilities of the commissioner regarding the review and revision of various academic standards across subjects, including mathematics, arts, science, language arts, physical education, and health education. The bill emphasizes the importance of aligning academic standards with the knowledge and skills necessary for career and college readiness, while also embedding Indigenous education and ethnic studies into the state's academic framework.
