This bill establishes a new right for residential tenants in Minnesota to house a youth aged 25 years or younger for up to 60 days without facing eviction or retaliation from their landlord. Tenants must notify their landlord within seven days of the youth's arrival, providing specific details about both the tenant and the youth. During this 60-day period, landlords are prohibited from raising rent or utility fees and cannot require the youth to sign a lease or rental agreement.
Additionally, the bill outlines that the tenant remains responsible for any liabilities related to the rental unit, including damages and rent payments. If a landlord attempts to evict a tenant or retaliate against them for housing a youth in violation of this new law, such actions must be dismissed, and the tenant's record will be expunged. The landlord may also be held liable for damages incurred by the tenant due to violations of this section, including court and attorney fees.
