This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.2232, to require consecutive sentences for assaults committed by inmates in local correctional facilities, specifically when the assault is against a county sheriff or sheriff's deputy. The new legal language specifies that if an inmate in a county jail or similar facility is convicted of assaulting a sheriff or deputy while confined, the sentence for that assault will run consecutively to any existing or future sentences related to the crimes for which the inmate was already in custody. Additionally, the inmate will not receive credit for time served on the earlier sentence against the new assault sentence.
The bill also clarifies that inmates convicted of assaulting others while confined in state facilities will similarly serve their sentences consecutively, regardless of whether the assault conviction is for a misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor. The effective date for this legislation is set for August 1, 2025, and it will apply to crimes committed on or after that date.
