This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 375A.12, by adding a new subdivision that mandates retention elections for individuals appointed to certain county offices. According to the new provisions, a county must conduct a retention election at the first general election following the appointment of an individual to an office. If voters do not approve the retention of the appointee, they may remain in the position only until January 1 following the election, after which the county board of commissioners must appoint a new individual. Conversely, if the voters approve the retention, the appointee will remain in their position and will face a retention election every four years thereafter.

The bill specifies that the ballot question for the retention election will ask voters whether they approve of retaining the appointed individual in their role. This new requirement aims to enhance accountability for appointed officials by allowing voters to have a say in their continued service. The effective date of this section is set for the day following its final enactment.
