This bill mandates that school principals or designated school board representatives must provide timely notifications to teachers and parents regarding violent incidents occurring on school grounds or during school-sponsored activities, particularly when injuries are involved. The notification must include information about whether any videos or recordings of the incident exist and must also be issued when a dangerous weapon is brandished or confiscated. The bill specifies that "timely notice" should be given within 24 to 48 hours of the incident and must be sent to a contact method that parents have consented to, while ensuring that no identifying information about the students involved is disclosed.
Additionally, the bill prohibits charter schools and school districts from retaliating against teachers or school employees who report or discuss incidents of school violence or dangerous conduct. It also protects employees from retaliation for participating in investigations related to school safety. Importantly, the bill clarifies that it does not waive any student data privacy rights under existing federal and state laws. This new legislation is set to take effect for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond.
