1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Alice Lee on winning the 2024 Women's American Cup in
1.3chess.
1.4WHEREAS, the American Cup, a tournament hosted by the Saint Louis Chess Club, brings
1.5together world-class chess masters to compete in a high-speed format at the World Chess Hall of
1.6Fame in Missouri; and
1.7WHEREAS, Alice Lee of North Oaks, Minnesota, placed first in the women's tournament,
1.8winning $40,000 in prize money. The 14-year-old defeated Irina Krush, an adult grandmaster and
1.9one of the best female chess players in the United States; and
1.10WHEREAS, Alice is the third-youngest person in the world to be named an International
1.11Master, as well as the youngest American female to hold this title. Also named a Woman
1.12Grandmaster, Alice is a three-time World Youth Champion and the 2023 United States Girls' Junior
1.13Champion; and
1.14WHEREAS, Alice began competing at age six, when she joined her older brother in the
1.15school chess club, and is now approaching Grandmaster status; and
1.16NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.17congratulates Alice Lee on her victory in the 2024 Women's American Cup and her extraordinary
1.18chess career.
1.19BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.20enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.21Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Alice Lee.
