This bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2022, section 97B.001, to modify trespass laws by allowing the use of purple markings as a means of indicating property boundaries. A new subdivision is added to define "forest land" as land with at least ten percent tree cover that will reach a height of 13 feet at maturity and shows evidence of natural tree regeneration. The bill also updates existing language to include "marked" alongside "posted" in the context of entering private land for outdoor recreation, requiring individuals to obtain permission from the landowner, occupant, or lessee.
Additionally, the bill specifies that landowners can prohibit outdoor recreation by placing identifying purple paint marks on trees and other permanent objects, with specific requirements for the size, placement, and visibility of these marks. The bill outlines that these purple markings must be vertical lines of at least eight inches long and one inch wide, positioned between three to five feet off the ground, and spaced appropriately depending on whether the land is classified as forest or not. The bill also clarifies that individuals retrieving wounded game may enter unmarked land without permission but must leave immediately after the retrieval.
