The bill amends existing legislation regarding the eligible uses of public safety aid for counties, Tribal governments, and local units in Minnesota. It expands the permissible uses of this aid to include the purchase of armored or tactical vehicles and the costs associated with the construction, reconstruction, remodeling, expansion, or improvement of police stations and related facilities. The definition of "related facilities" is clarified to encompass access roads, lighting, sidewalks, and utility components necessary for safe access to the police station.
Additionally, the bill specifies that the aid cannot be used for certain expenses, including employer contributions to the public employees police and fire fund if the entity received police state aid in 2022, or any costs related to alleged wrongdoing or misconduct. Notably, the previous restrictions on using the aid for purchasing armored vehicles and improving police stations have been removed. The changes are effective retroactively for aids payable in 2023.
