This bill mandates that health plan companies in Minnesota provide coverage for the management and treatment of obesity, as outlined in a new section, [62Q.474]. The required coverage includes evidence-based obesity treatments such as behavioral, dietary, and physical activity interventions, bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved medications for obesity. The provisions of this bill will take effect on January 1, 2025, applying to health plans that are offered, issued, or renewed on or after that date.

Additionally, the bill amends Minnesota Statutes 2022, section 256B.0625, by adding a subdivision that ensures medical assistance covers the management and treatment of obesity in accordance with the new requirements established in section 62Q.474. This amendment also becomes effective on January 1, 2025.
