The bill amends Minnesota Statutes to clarify the authority of licensed traditional midwives regarding the acquisition and administration of certain drugs, supplies, and devices. Specifically, it allows licensed traditional midwives to obtain, possess, and administer drugs such as maternal RhoGAM treatment, postpartum antihemorrhagic drugs in emergency situations, local anesthetics, oxygen, and prophylactic eye agents for newborns. The bill also maintains that traditional midwives cannot prescribe or dispense prescription drugs, nor perform surgical procedures beyond suture repairs for minor lacerations.
Additionally, the bill introduces a new subdivision to section 151.37, which explicitly authorizes licensed traditional midwives to directly obtain supplies and devices, administer drugs and diagnostic tests as permitted, order tests, and receive reports, all within the scope of their professional practice. Both sections of the bill will take effect the day following final enactment.
