The bill mandates a study on advanced nuclear reactors in Minnesota, specifically focusing on small modular reactors and molten sodium reactors. The commissioner of commerce is tasked with evaluating the potential costs, benefits, and impacts of these reactors, including their effects on air emissions, electricity prices, grid reliability, environmental resources, public health, employment opportunities, local economic development, and compliance with existing energy standards. Additionally, the study will identify necessary modifications to state statutes and administrative rules to facilitate the construction and operation of these reactors, as well as assess technologies for minimizing nuclear waste impacts.

To support this initiative, the bill appropriates $100,000 from the general fund for fiscal year 2024 to fund the study and report development. The commissioner is required to submit the findings to the relevant legislative committees by January 31, 2025.
