The bill amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act by adding a new section, 1b, which establishes specific criteria for memorial designations under the act. According to the new provisions, a memorial designation can only be made for subjects that are historically or culturally significant to Michigan or the United States. Eligible subjects include individuals, groups, organizations, military units, operations, events, or awards, with the stipulation that if the designation is for an individual or group, the individual must be deceased. Additionally, if the designation pertains to a service member, that service member must have died in the line of duty.
The bill also specifies that for designations related to groups, organizations, or military entities, their mission or purpose must directly connect to individuals who were public service officers or service members killed in the line of duty. The enactment of this amendatory act is contingent upon the passage of Senate Bill No. 708 of the 103rd Legislature.
