This bill amends the Michigan Vehicle Code to expand the eligibility for special registration plates for veterans and their families. It allows individuals who were prisoners of war, World War I veterans, Pearl Harbor survivors, recipients of the Purple Heart medal, as well as members of Gold Star and Blue Star families, and next of kin of deceased military personnel to apply for special plates. The plates will feature specific inscriptions, such as "EX-POW," "World War I veteran," "Pearl Harbor survivor," "combat wounded veteran," "Gold Star Family," "Blue Star Family," and "Next of Kin," along with unique identification numbers.
Additionally, the bill modifies certain legal language, including the removal of the term "Medal" from "Purple Heart Medal" to simply "Purple Heart medal." It also clarifies the definitions of "Blue star family member," "Gold star family member," and "Next of kin," ensuring that the criteria for eligibility are well-defined. The application process for these special plates will not require a service fee, and the plates will expire on the vehicle owner's birthday in years when new plates are issued. The bill is set to take effect 90 days after being enacted into law.
