The bill amends the Michigan Vehicle Code to expand the eligibility for special registration plates for veterans and their families. It allows individuals who were prisoners of war, World War I veterans, Pearl Harbor survivors, recipients of the Purple Heart medal, as well as members of Gold Star and Blue Star families, to apply for special plates with unique inscriptions. Notably, the bill introduces a new category for "Next of Kin" of deceased personnel, allowing them to apply for a plate inscribed with a specific insignia. The application process for these plates will not require a service fee, and the renewal process is simplified, eliminating the need for proof of eligibility upon renewal.
Additionally, the bill makes several changes to the language regarding the Purple Heart medal, replacing "Medal" with "medal" for consistency. It also clarifies definitions for terms such as "Blue star family member," "Gold star family member," and "Next of kin," ensuring that the criteria for eligibility are clearly outlined. The amendments aim to honor and recognize the sacrifices of veterans and their families by providing them with a means to display their service through special vehicle registration plates. The act will take effect 180 days after being enacted into law.
