This bill amends the Revised School Code to require that, starting in the 2027-2028 school year, all school districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies in Michigan include age- and grade-appropriate units of instruction on various cultural histories in their history curricula. The mandated instruction covers a range of communities, including Black, Indigenous Peoples, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latin American, Hispanic American, Caribbean American, Middle Eastern, North African, Chaldean American, and Jewish American histories. Each unit must address significant contributions and historical events related to these communities, particularly their roles in civil rights advancements and the effects of discriminatory policies.

Additionally, the bill requires the Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop instructional materials aligned with state social studies standards, incorporating input from cultural centers and experts. It emphasizes inclusivity and appropriateness for all students, prohibiting any promotion of bias or discrimination. The bill also allows for flexibility in integrating these units into existing lesson plans and permits the use of virtual courses to fulfill these requirements. Furthermore, it updates existing laws regarding core academic curriculum standards to focus on academic instruction while including provisions for teaching about discrimination and oppression against marginalized populations.
