The bill amends the Revised School Code by adding Section 1164c, which mandates the Michigan Department of Education to develop or adopt a list of model programs for teaching cursive handwriting by June 1, 2027. This list will provide guidance on how cursive instruction can be integrated into state educational standards to meet the Michigan merit standard credit requirements outlined in sections 1278a and 1278b.

Starting with the 2027-2028 school year, school districts and public school academies are strongly encouraged to incorporate one of the model programs into their curricula. If the list is available before the 2026-2027 school year, schools are encouraged to begin implementing the cursive instruction at that time. This initiative aims to promote the teaching of cursive handwriting in Michigan's public schools.
