This bill amends the Revised School Code of 1976 by adding a new section, 1164c, which mandates the development or adoption of model programs for cursive instruction by the Department of Education. By June 1, 2027, the department is required to make these programs available to public schools, along with guidance on how to integrate cursive instruction into state standards to meet the Michigan merit standard credit requirements outlined in sections 1278a and 1278b.
Starting with the 2027-2028 school year, school district boards and public school academy directors are strongly encouraged to incorporate one of the model programs into their curricula. If the department finalizes the list of model programs before the 2026-2027 school year, schools are encouraged to begin implementation in that earlier school year. This initiative aims to promote cursive writing as a valuable skill within the educational framework.
