The bill amends the Michigan Insurance Code to require health insurance policies that provide coverage for prescription contraceptives to include a 12-month supply of these contraceptives, which must be dispensed at one time unless a smaller supply is requested by the insured or instructed by the prescriber. Additionally, the bill mandates coverage for necessary outpatient consultations, examinations, and medical services related to the prescription contraceptives. Insurers are prohibited from imposing utilization controls that limit the supply to less than a 12-month supply unless deemed medically inappropriate by the FDA.
Furthermore, the bill clarifies that insurers are not required to provide coverage for a 12-month supply of prescription contraceptives during the month leading up to the end of an insured's plan year. The definitions of "pharmacy," "prescriber," and "prescription contraceptive" are also included to ensure clarity in the application of the law. This amendment will take effect for health insurance policies delivered or renewed starting December 31, 2025.
