HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.298
Reps. Skaggs, Glanville, Haadsma, MacDonell, Paiz, Rheingans and
Wilson offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare September 16-20, 2024, as Septic Smart
2 Week in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, Proper septic system use and routine care are vital
4 to protecting public health, preserving our groundwater, lakes,
5 streams, and waterways, and avoiding costly repairs that can result
6 from neglect; and
7 Whereas, Over 1.3 million septic systems in Michigan treat
8 wastewater from homes and businesses and represent a significant
9 part of Michigan's wastewater infrastructure; and
10 Whereas, If not used and maintained properly, septic systems
11 can become leaky, broken, or outdated and introduce nitrogen,

1 phosphorous, household chemicals, bacteria, viruses, and other
2 harmful pollutants into state waters; and
3 Whereas, Wastewater professionals in Michigan use their
4 expertise in the design, installation, maintenance, and regulation
5 of septic systems in Michigan; and
6 Whereas, The United States Environmental Protection Agency's
7 SepticSmart Program, used by Michigan health officials, educates
8 homeowners about the need for proper septic system use and routine
9 maintenance; and
10 Whereas, Residents and the environment of Michigan benefit
11 from properly designed, installed, operated, and maintained septic
12 systems; and
13 Whereas, The State of Michigan has created and started a new
14 statewide septic replacement loan program that assists system
15 owners in replacing failing septic systems; now, therefore, be it
16 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
17 this legislative body declare September 16-20, 2024, as SepticSmart
18 Week in the state of Michigan.
